Vázquez says goodbye to Real Madrid: 'A lifelong dream fulfilled'

During the farewell ceremony held at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex, president Florentino Pérez delivered an emotional and heartfelt tribute to Lucas Vázquez, a player he described as the embodiment of the club’s values.

"Lucas, you represent everything that Real Madrid stands for," Pérez said in his speech. "You are a symbol of the work ethic, humility, and determination that we expect from every player who comes through our academy. You have set an example not just for your teammates, but for every young player dreaming of wearing this shirt. You have been a mirror for our youth showing them that success is built on perseverance, respect, and love for this badge."

Pérez went on to emphasize Vázquez’s unique contribution to the club, not just in terms of titles and performances, but also as a leader in the dressing room. "You helped new signings integrate, you showed respect for every coach who led us, and you created bonds with every teammate who shared the field with you. On the pitch, you gave everything, and off the pitch, you reminded us all of what it means to be a Madridista proud, committed, and selfless. For that, we are eternally grateful."

Vázquez, visibly emotional throughout the ceremony, addressed his teammates, family, and the fans with a mixture of gratitude and pride. “This is without a doubt one of the most important days of my life,” he began. “When I was a kid growing up in Galicia, I could never have imagined that I would one day fulfill the dream of playing for the greatest club in the world. Wearing this shirt, stepping onto the Bernabéu pitch, hearing the anthem, celebrating victories with the fans those are moments I will carry with me forever.”

He continued by expressing his deep appreciation for the supporters who stood by him through every triumph and challenge. “I want to thank the fans for their tireless love and warmth. Every time I played, I felt the responsibility of defending this club and its history, and I always tried to live up to that.”

Vázquez reflected on the privilege of having shared the dressing room with some of football’s greatest legends. “I’ve been lucky enough to win trophies, to fight alongside icons of the game, and to experience nights that seemed like dreams those unforgettable Champions League comebacks, the finals, the parades. I’ve felt happy, valued, respected, and loved.”

He also turned to his family with special gratitude, acknowledging the sacrifices they made throughout his career. “To my family and to my wife and children, thank you for being by my side every step of the way. This journey would not have been possible without your support, patience, and love.” Addressing his children directly, he added with emotion, “I hope that one day you will understand what it meant to your father to wear these colours, to represent this crest, and to be part of this family called Real Madrid.”

After 402 appearances for Real Madrid, Vázquez leaves behind a legacy decorated with silverware: five Champions League titles, multiple Club World Cups, four UEFA Super Cups, La Liga titles, Spanish Super Cups, and a Copa del Rey. His departure marks the end of an era, as he joins the exclusive list of homegrown players who not only reached the first team but left an indelible mark on the club’s history.

“I leave with peace of mind, knowing that I gave everything I had,” Vázquez declared. “I fulfilled my lifelong dream at the greatest club in the world. There is no greater honour than that. I may be leaving, but Real Madrid will live in me forever. I am and will always be Lucas Vázquez, a product of Real Madrid’s youth academy.”

As for his next destination, the future remains uncertain. Speculation continues to swirl around potential moves within Spain or abroad, with several clubs reportedly interested in acquiring a player of his experience and versatility. However, Vázquez chose not to reveal any details about his next chapter, stating that "now is a time for gratitude and reflection, not announcements."

The ceremony concluded with a standing ovation from all in attendance, including teammates past and present, club officials, and staff a fitting tribute to a player who, through dedication and humility, became much more than just a number on the team sheet.
